Making an App for Depression Better

Pleasant Event Scheduling (PES) can now be done on your personal smartphone with a mobile app called Positive Activity Jackpot (PAJ). PES is a term that psychologists use for “brainstorming for healthy activities” – a behavioral health exercise for depression that’s traditionally done with pen and paper. And unless you’re privy to all the clinical research to know that it’s a solid and clinically valid tool for depression, it’s an exercise that on the surface could seem almost trivial.

Unfortunately, there have been a lot of stories in the news lately about sexual assault in the military. Sexual assault is intentional sexual contact without consent. Oftentimes victims feel overwhelmed, alternating between feelings of anger, sadness, anxiety, and numbness (feeling nothing at all). Sexual assault can happen to both men and women, and perpetrators can also be male or female. In addition, 85 percent of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim.

Provider Alert: CBT-i Coach for Insomnia is Now Available

The CBT-i Coach mobile app, developed through a collaboration of the National Center for PTSD, Stanford University and T2, supports cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-i). CBT-i Coach was designed for people who are having difficulty sleeping and participating in cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia with a health provider. The app includes a sleep assessment, sleep diary, sleep-management tools, and reminders.

Suicide Prevention Mobile Apps

As many of you may know, September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Coincidentally, about two weeks ago I came across a recently published article that reviewed iOS and Android mobile apps developed specifically for the prevention of suicide. The authors of this review make some very important points that I think should be shared regarding future development of mobile apps for this very timely topic.
