Psychology Residents Experience Telehealth Frontiers

Professional workshops often include role-playing activities. But they usually don’t involve the workshop leader creating an image on a large screen of the vehicle in front of you being flipped by an IED blast as a volunteer describes a war-zone ambush. That kind of thing definitely makes an impression on an audience.

"People told me they were riveted," said Dr. Barbara Rothbaum, the workshop presenter who operated the virtual reality program while a volunteer psychologist wearing a head-mounted display role-played reliving memories of trauma.

Telehealth is just as good...

My colleagues and I recently published a meta-analysis which compared synchronous telehealth therapy to standard care for the reduction of depression symptoms. For those unfamiliar with the term, telehealth is the use of technology to connect patients and providers separated by distance and time. Synchronous telehealth therapy is the use of videoconferencing or teleconferencing to conduct therapy with patients.

Escaping the Pitfalls of Technology Training

We all need training at different points in our lives, whether it’s to learn to ride a bike or drive a car, or to stay current in a chosen career; it has to happen. For some, thinking about a training opportunity is uplifting and viewed as a time to engage in a new topic. For others, even thinking about training makes them want to run away screaming and crying.

Bringing Behavioral Health Home

One of the biggest risks to your behavioral health is putting off treatment that could not only get you feeling better sooner, but also save your relationships, your career, and ultimately, your life. There are a lot of reasons we put off taking care of ourselves. Some things are out of our control (for example, needing to see a specialist in a city that is two hours away), and others are the result of the very thing we’re trying to get help with (such as not wanting to talk about difficult, personal topics).
